This cattle breed is well-adapted to the difficult conditions of the African plains: sparse and poor quality food, limited amounts of water and extreme temperatures. They are known for their long horns: up to 2.4 m long and 20 centimetres in diameter!
Ankole cattle were traditionally considered a symbol of wealth by the Masai tribe. Their milk is made into yoghurt and consumed widely, but their meat is rarely eaten.
